Removing an existing interior staircase during renovation
Taking carpet off a stair, replacing the stair within its opening and changing the floor opening are three different renovations. Identify which one the new circulation design requires before asking for stair removal. The stair's material, supports and landings affect what can be assessed.
Discuss the removal portion through our interior demolition service.
Compare the three physical cases
An illustrative house section helps separate decorative finishes from the assembly carrying people between floors.
| Proposed change | What may leave | What must be resolved |
|---|---|---|
| Finish renewal | Named carpet, trim or finish layers | Retained treads, risers, railing and receiving surface |
| Replacement in the same opening | Assessed stair assembly and specified attachments | Existing support, landing boundaries and replacement requirements |
| New opening or stair position | Separately designed stair and floor changes | Structure, temporary conditions and new circulation |
Removing a finish does not confirm that the exposed timber is suitable as a finished stair. Equally, retaining an opening does not establish that a replacement assembly uses the same supports.
Trace the junctions above and below
Ask the designer to identify the landings, surrounding floor and any walls connected to the stair. A stair enclosure can conceal services or meet a retained ceiling. Record those interfaces alongside the stair itself.
Structural review and any necessary support belong in the professional plan. Bolan's assessment follows the defined removal and does not design the replacement stair or prescribe a universal dismantling sequence.
Plan for the period without the stair
The GC and responsible project professionals determine access and protection while the connection is unavailable. Identify rooms and work areas affected by that decision before setting the removal programme. A new stair delivery date alone does not establish a workable transition.
For an illustrative replacement, the owner retains both landings while an assessed timber stair leaves. The replacement contractor specifies the receiving connections. If the design later moves the stair, the removal scope must be revisited because the floor and access decisions have changed as well.
Bring the section, not just a stair photograph
Provide Bolan with the proposed circulation, known stair material, retained landings and replacement contractor's requirements. Distinguish finish removal from assembly removal and any engineered floor change. Identify unresolved supports for review; do not infer them from the visible underside alone.
