Deck and Fence Removal in Oakville

How we do it
The two photos in this folder show the middle of each kind of job: a backyard deck taken down to its frame with boards piled on the soil, and wood fence panels dismantled and stacked beside a paved yard ready to load.
Decks come apart in reverse order: railings, then boards, then the frame and ledger, then posts and footings. Where the deck is attached to the house, we take extra care at the ledger board so the siding, flashing and door sill are not damaged. Older decks are often made of pressure-treated wood, which goes to disposal rather than being burned or chipped.
Fences on property lines are shared structures, so we recommend talking to your neighbour before the fence comes down. Posts are pulled or cut below grade, and concrete footings are removed if a new fence is going in along the same line.
Trees along fence lines are common in Oakville. Trees of 15 centimetres or more in diameter at breast height are protected by the town's Private Tree Protection By-law, and we work around their roots when pulling posts.
Deck and fence removal is often a small job on its own, but it is also a common first step before a pool removal, garage demolition or full yard redesign. Combining the work into one visit keeps the yard disturbed for less time, reduces trips in and out of the property, and means one crew is responsible for leaving everything clean. - Do I need a permit to remove a deck in Oakville?
- Removing a deck generally does not need a demolition permit, but building a new one often needs a building permit. Check with the town before your new deck is built.
- Should I tell my neighbour before removing a shared fence?
- Yes. A boundary fence is shared, and agreeing on timing and the replacement first avoids disputes.
