Removing a pergola above a patio you want to keep

A pergola can be fixed through a patio, attached to the house or connected to another garden structure. If the paving stays, the post and footing decisions deserve as much attention as the frame above. Define the desired result at each post rather than describing the work as a complete clearout.

    Record each connection

Take pictures of the posts at ground level and the visible connections to the house or adjacent structures. Include lighting or other services. The assessment should establish which parts can be separated and which need specialist review. Avoid climbing onto the pergola or moving unstable parts to get a photograph.

    Choose the paving repair boundary

Ask the landscaper how the post locations will be finished after removal. A footing under pavers may require a different reinstatement detail from a fixing through concrete. Specify whether local paving removal is included and who supplies matching materials. The demolition scope should not imply an invisible repair to an aged patio.

    Agree access above retained features

Show furniture, planting, glazing and other features below or beside the structure. Clear movable belongings beforehand if agreed. Bolan can assess the frame and footing removal while the receiving contractor sets the repair details. Keep any additional paving work subject to approval if concealed footings differ from expectations.

Prepare this decision for the assessment

Bring these details to the site discussion so the removal scope reflects the parts of your property that are changing.

    • Connection photos from safe positions
    • Post-by-post repair boundary
    • Retained patio condition record
