Inside the house

Removing a kitchen island before changing the layout

A kitchen island may look like a piece of furniture, but removing it can leave several separate jobs in the middle of the room. Decide what the replacement layout needs before treating the island as one demolition item. A sink, cooktop or powered seating area changes who needs to visit before removal. Even an island without visible services can conceal fixings or an unfinished patch in the floor.

    Start with the floor plan

Mark the island outline on the existing plan and the proposed replacement position on a second copy. If the new island is smaller or moves across the room, the exposed footprint becomes a flooring decision. Ask the flooring installer whether a local patch is practical before assuming that the surrounding floor can remain untouched. Photographs of the floor at the cabinet edges are more useful than a room-area measurement alone.

    Separate the connected items

List the countertop, sink, appliances, lighting and cabinetry independently. The appropriate trades must establish what is connected and make those connections safe before removal. A heavy top intended for reuse needs a separately agreed recovery approach; ordinary demolition does not promise an intact countertop. Keep the new appliance specifications available so the designer can resolve future service positions.

    Describe the condition after removal

An empty footprint is not necessarily ready for a new island. Agree who deals with exposed connections, fixing points, floor repairs and any opening left behind. Bolan can assess the removal portion of the interior scope. Your installer should specify the surface they need to receive, including whether surrounding flooring stays covered during the work.

Prepare this decision for the assessment

Bring these details to the site discussion so the removal scope reflects the parts of your property that are changing.

    • Island footprint and replacement position
    • Connected appliances and trade contacts
    • Floor patch decision and receiving installer
