Inside the house
Changing a kitchen footprint: what happens to the exposed floor?
Moving the cabinets can reveal a floor that was never finished beneath them. Before choosing between a partial kitchen removal and a wider strip-out, compare the old cabinet outline with the new one. The gap between those outlines is the area most likely to need a separate flooring decision. It may be a small patch with a large effect on the finished room.
Overlay the old and new footprints
Use different colours for existing cabinets, new cabinets and retained appliances. Mark every strip of newly exposed floor, including under a moved island. Record the visible floor material without trying to identify concealed layers by appearance. The installer needs to see the exposed area before accepting a patch or levelling solution.
Choose a boundary that can actually be finished
A removal line hidden under a new cabinet is different from one across an open doorway. Ask the flooring installer where a transition can land and whether matching material is available. Save a sample or product record if you already have one. Do not extend demolition simply to search for a match without an agreed revised scope.
Separate demolition from the new finish
The removal quote should distinguish cabinets, floor covering, underlay and any substrate work. A clear floor is not a promise of a level or installation-ready surface. Note who reviews the floor once the cabinets are out and who authorises any additional removal. This prevents a cabinet change from quietly becoming an unapproved whole-room floor replacement.
Prepare this decision for the assessment
Bring these details to the site discussion so the removal scope reflects the parts of your property that are changing.
- Two footprints on one drawing
- Transition locations accepted by installer
- Hold point after cabinets are removed
