Each utility disconnects its own service at the owner's request and issues a confirmation, and the demolition crew does not start until every confirmation is in hand. What each disconnect involves

The details vary by property, but in general terms each service is dealt with like this:

Oakville Hydro removes the meter and cuts the service, either at the pole for an overhead drop or at the underground connection.
Enbridge Gas removes the meter and caps the gas service at the property.
Halton Region removes the water meter and caps the water service and the sanitary sewer connection, at the property line or at the main depending on the situation.
Telecom providers remove or disconnect their cable, phone and internet lines.

Request them well ahead

The safest approach is to request every disconnect as soon as the demolition date is roughly known, rather than waiting for the permit to be issued.

Why the crew will not work around a live service

A broken gas line can cause a fire or explosion, and a live cable can electrocute an operator. No schedule pressure justifies working around one, so a responsible crew simply waits for the confirmations.

What stays live

Some services near the lot stay energised even after your disconnects are done. A neighbour's overhead drop may share a pole with yours, streetlights run on their own supply, and utility lines along the road are not affected. The crew locates and protects those before work starts, and Ontario One Call locates are requested before any digging.

Where the confirmations go

The Town of Oakville's demolition permit process asks for sign-off from each utility, so the confirmations go into the permit file with Town of Oakville Building Services.
