Tub-to-shower conversion: define removal before ordering the shower

A tub-to-shower conversion is not simply a tub collection. The surround, floor junction and plumbing position can all change with the new design. Start with the proposed shower arrangement and ask the installer what needs to be exposed. This lets the removal stop at a useful point without claiming that the cleared area is already suitable for a new waterproof assembly.

Identify everything attached to the tub

Photograph the surround, nearby vanity, access panels and any enclosure. State which fittings are being retained. The plumber should establish isolation and the future connection requirements. A removal crew should not infer that a disconnected-looking fitting is safe to move or that an existing drain position suits the new shower.

Keep the wall and floor decisions linked

If the new shower extends beyond the old tub, the floor outside the old footprint may also change. Ask the installer to mark the required exposure, backing and threshold boundaries. Existing finishes can conceal older layers, so material assessment needs to cover what will actually be disturbed. Do not treat a product brochure as a site-specific demolition plan.

    Define the installer’s inspection point

Agree when the installer will review the opened area and who approves a change if concealed conditions differ. Keep demolition, plumbing, waterproofing and finish installation as separate responsibilities even when one builder coordinates them. An estimate is clearer when the proposed layout and those responsibilities arrive together.

Prepare this decision for the assessment

Bring these details to the site discussion so the removal scope reflects the parts of your property that are changing.

    • Proposed shower footprint
    • Retained fixtures and plumbing contact
    • Installer review before closing surfaces
