Removing a driveway before installing a snow-melt system
A heated replacement driveway needs a coordinated design before the old surface is removed. The removal contractor needs the extent of the new work; the system installer needs the correct base and interfaces. This is not a guide to installing heating cables or pipes. It is a way to avoid treating a new system as an ordinary resurfacing job.
Share the system and paving plans
Ask the installer to identify the area served, the equipment location and the proposed route to the house. Identify any existing heating system in the old driveway. The relevant trades must assess and isolate affected equipment before removal. An unlabelled driveway should not be assumed to contain no services.
Separate private paving from the street edge
Show the property line, curb connection and any boulevard work on the plan. In Oakville, street-side work should be checked against the town’s requirements rather than assumed to be part of the private driveway. The system layout should not expand the removal into public land without review.
Define the base handoff
Ask the replacement contractor which layers they need removed and who accepts the exposed base. Record drainage and final level decisions with that contractor. Bolan can assess the surface and base removal once those boundaries are clear. Keep installation specifications and commissioning with the heating and paving professionals.
Prepare this decision for the assessment
Bring these details to the site discussion so the removal scope reflects the parts of your property that are changing.
- System and paving drawings together
- Property and road interface checked
- Base acceptance by replacement contractor
