House and builder decisions

Removing a walkway for a more accessible entrance

If the aim is an easier route into the house, start with the complete entrance design rather than the old walkway alone. Door thresholds, landing space and the connection to the driveway can determine how much paving needs to come out. Removal should follow a layout reviewed by the person designing the new accessible route.

Describe the journey from vehicle to door

Mark the starting point, door to be used, existing steps and any tight turns. Explain the household’s practical access needs to the designer. This is an opportunity to discuss options, not a basis for the demolition contractor to specify an accessible slope or landing from a photograph.

Set the boundary from the replacement plan

A new route may cross an existing garden bed or meet a different part of the driveway. Ask which old slabs, steps and bases must be removed and which are retained. Identify nearby services and drainage features for assessment. Do not remove a useful interim path before another access arrangement is agreed.

    Plan the interval between contractors

Agree how residents and visitors will enter while the replacement work is underway. Name the contractor responsible for temporary access and final installation. Bolan can assess removal of the marked surfaces, with any unexpected footing or substrate condition reported before widening the job.

Prepare this decision for the assessment

Bring these details to the site discussion so the removal scope reflects the parts of your property that are changing.

    • Whole entrance route reviewed
    • Replacement boundary before removal
    • Interim household access
